
Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, also known as Alternate Nostril Breathing. This classic yogic technique is a cornerstone in Tantra for purifying the subtle energy channels (nadis), balancing the left ( ida – cooling, lunar, feminine) and right ( pingala – heating, solar, masculine) sides of the body, and harmonizing the flow of prana (life force).
In Tantric practice, balanced energy flow creates inner union (Shiva-Shakti), calms the mind for deeper presence, reduces stress, and prepares you for more advanced energy work like chakra activation or sacred intimacy. Even 5–10 minutes can leave you feeling centered, clear-headed, and energetically aligned.

How to Practice Nadi Shodhana (Step-by-Step)
- Find a comfortable seated position with your spine straight and shoulders relaxed (cross-legged on a cushion, chair, or even lying down if needed). Rest your left hand on your knee (palm up or in chin mudra for grounding).
- Bring your right hand to your nose in Vishnu Mudra (or Nasagra Mudra): Fold your index and middle fingers down toward your palm (or rest them lightly on your forehead). You’ll use your thumb to close the right nostril and your ring finger (or ring + pinky) to close the left nostril.
- Close your eyes softly and take a moment to settle. Exhale completely through both nostrils to start fresh.
- Close your right nostril with your thumb.
- Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril (count 4–6 if comfortable).
- Close your left nostril with your ring finger (release the right nostril).
- Exhale slowly and fully through your right nostril (same count as inhale or slightly longer, e.g., 4–8).
- Inhale through your right nostril (same count).
- Close right nostril again, release left.
- Exhale through your left nostril. This completes one full round (one cycle = inhale left → exhale right → inhale right → exhale left).
- Continue for 5–10 minutes (about 8–15 rounds for beginners). Keep breaths smooth, even, and without strain—no forcing or breath retention yet (we’ll add that later).
- Finish by exhaling through the left nostril, then release your hand and breathe naturally through both nostrils for a minute. Sit in stillness, noticing any shifts in energy, mind, or body.
Tips for Today
- If one nostril feels blocked, that’s normal—practice gently; it often clears during the session.
- Breathe through your nose only (no mouth breathing).
- If you’re new, start with equal inhales/exhales (4:4). Later, try 4:8 (inhale 4, exhale 8) for deeper calming.
- Practice in your sacred space, perhaps with a candle or soft light.
- Journal afterward: How did your mind feel before vs. after? Any sensations in the body? Did you notice more balance or calm?
